The hair is very soft and there is no smell. I just received it today and I have not tried the unit on yet. It says human hair so I reached out to haieinbeauty to get recommendations for styling tools and heat temperatures no word back yet. I don't know about shed ding but I will update my review once I have had the opportunity to work with it
